Pleasures
An early morning hike in Griffith Park (Hogback is my route) while listening to Wild God, Nick Cave’s most recent album, as loud as I can while trying not to damage my ears. This hike, and music, has quite literally saved me this past month. Thank God for nature and Nick.
The first espresso of the day. My husband has his barista game dialed in, and I’m the lucky recipient of his efforts. This with some fruit starts my morning off well.
Morning pages. Another moment in my day that I crave and treasure for its simplicity and impact.
The first sounds of popcorn popping. We eat popcorn for dinner at least once a week, and when I hear it start popping I always feel good about it.
NBA radio. Hear me out on this one. It’s strange, but super calming. I think it’s all the time I spent in the car as a kid with my dad with this playing in the background. An instant reset to my nervous system.
The sound of a new can of tennis balls opening. Anticipation, freshness and hope. All for $5.
The smell of my sourdough starter, Gadu, after she’s been fed.
White rice with tamari on top. Simple and perfect.
The birds in our neighborhood. There is a baby red tail hawk that hangs out on our deck and owls that spend time on the roof. Pure magic.
Chihuahuas. Preferably ones from the street. Such strange and funny little beasts. I can’t believe we get to live with them.
Oregon in the summer. I grew up in the high desert and there is nothing like that air and smell to me. An instant transport to my childhood. The good parts.

What Is “Pleasures, Curated”?
Each week, a new Pleasure-seeker will document their personal Pleasures and ruminate a bit on what Pleasure means to them. True to
style, I keep the list-maker’s je ne sais quoi in as much as I can — only minor editorial changes are made when necessary. I do this intentionally so that the writer’s inner world really comes through. The style of the list says as much about the writer as the list itself.Read Previous Q&A’s:
Why submit a list?
Pleasure Lists are a summary of what you need, want, or have, or see at a particular moment in time. They are a survey, an overview, a summary of the crucial facts of the state of one aspect of your life. It’s a kind of blueprint that can be a guide to the future.
Mull it over and if you’re moved to, send me a list.
