“I experience at least a little pleasure every day.” — Zadie Smith
What's in a list? What do the lists we make say about ourselves?
What is it about other people’s lists that we love so much? We’ve seen the effect that Joan Didion’s packing list had on legions of devotees who aspired to possess the same cool simplicity.
But what about pleasure? The minute experiences in our day that bring us moments of personal bliss? We often move through life seeking out these little pleasures, searching for minor bursts of joy that infuse each day with feeling.
The pure simplicity and banality of Bertolt Brecht’s list shows us what we know to be true about pleasure: that it truly is in the eye of the beholder. Each list is as individual as its author, telling us more about the writer than the list itself.
From the material to the mundane, the tactile to the intangible, the things that bring us pleasure speak volumes about what we value.
Our personal preferences carry universal truths.
This is The Pleasure Lists.
