It’s the dawn of a new, exciting day for
: a much anticipated new column, called Pleasures, Curated. Each week, a new Pleasure-seeker will document their personal Pleasures and ruminate a bit on what Pleasure means to them. True to
style, I keep the list-maker’s je ne sais quoi in as much as I can — only minor editorial changes are made when necessary. I do this intentionally so that the writer’s inner world really comes through. The style of the list says as much about the writer as the list itself.Without further ado, this week’s Curator of Pleasures is none other than the inimitable
, who has recently launched her salacious read, , about her time growing up as a gilded child of Hollywood. Liz is a self-described “author, artist, filmmaker, Nepo-Baby and Founder of The Sex Ed.” Read on for Liz’s Pleasures. I have been ferociously devouring Liz’s newsletter each week, and have been a fan and follower of her work on her site, The Sex Ed, for years.Pleasures, Curated by
Hula hooping! Preferably a large weighted one. I like to watch a show or listen to a playlist while I hoop — amazing for the abs and keeps you juicy. Marisa Tomei turned me onto hooping years ago — that’s how she got her bod ripped for The Wrestler (she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance)
Watching old Millionaire Matchmaker episodes - I’m obsessed w Patti Stanger she’s hilarious and manages to be hippie dippy and scathing at once. I love when she called a short self-aggrandizing former child actor client “Hollywood hobbit.”
Reading rock / rap biographies (I will re-read them over and over for escapism)- some faves are:
Pamela Des Barres I’m With The Band (I interviewed her and Bebe Buell, who also wrote a great bio, on a special episode of The Sex Ed podcast called “Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll.”)
Rick James’ autobiography, Glow — so good, so juicy and he’s reinvented himself so many times—it was fascinating to learn he used to play in a band with Neil Young back in the day.
Hammer of The Gods, possible unauthorized bio of Led Zeppelin written in the 80s with all the sordid backstage and rock star band height of excess stories you could ask for.
Also Gucci Mane’s Autobiography is a great read
Playing with my new fairy chime (yes I know I’m a hippie dippy but it’s so relaxing)
- ’s [] podcast “You Must Remember This” is amazing and always a pleasure to explore— I especially love her “Dead Blondes” series
I interviewed Karina for an episode of The Sex Ed podcast where we talked about Howard Hughes, behind the scenes dirt and Hollywood’s treatment of women as sex objects in the early 20th century and today.
