Pleasures

Finding my cat sleeping in my arms when I wake up

I was never a pet person until I met this small, gray stray cat who frequented my backyard. After months (maybe even a year?) of feeding and getting to know her, we eventually took her in. Fast forward a couple years later and it still shocks me how me and my husband can have such a close, loving relationship with a once random stray cat -- her greeting us as soon as we get home, cuddling together in the night and waking up together in the morning.

Kind interactions with strangers

This photo is from a time I was having lunch with my mom and noticed an older man reading a book, which he then showed me. It was one by Judy Blume, a book his 12 year old granddaughter asked him to read. For the next 30 minutes, he and my mom and I got to know one another talking about everything from movies to politics to family life. At the end, we exchanged contacts. He was so sweet and it makes me so happy to think how something small like a book can turn into a beautiful, fleeting moment between complete strangers.

It was an important reminder that we all need to get out, look up from our phones, make eye contact, strike up conversations with strangers, talk to our Uber drivers, know our baristas' names, say hi to the girls we often see at workout classes, offer to take a photos for random couples on vacation, going up to cuties at the bar!

A good book

Ones that you can't help but underline and dogear and scream about from the rooftops.

Loved ones gathered in my home

There is nothing like the intimacy and carefreeness of gathering with your favorite people in the comfort of your own home - where you can take off your shoes, put your feet up on the chair and talk late into the night. I also love having people over in our backyard when the weather is right.

Exploring a new city

I love walking around and being able to stumble into an inviting coffeeshop or used bookstore or beautiful park in an unfamiliar place.

Clothes that fit just right

I'm very petite so it's rare I find pieces that actually fit - even better when it's vintage or secondhand because it feels that much more special.

Anything with lychee or passionfruit

Ice cold teas, warm moist cakes, tropical smoothies... If it has lychee or passionfruit in it, I'm ordering it.

"I love you"

Especially from my husband and especially when handwritten in a note or letter.
